From May 1 to July 20, 2012, the Douzelage Association in Chojna, the Secondary School Complex No. 1 in Chojna and the "Žiburys" Junior High School in Prienai are implementing the project "A Tale of Two Rivers: the Neman and the Oder" from the Polish-Lithuanian Youth Exchange Fund.

The Lithuanian project participants visited Chojna from June 14th to 20th. The group consisted of ten students and two supervisors.

Both partner groups presented previously prepared multimedia presentations containing information about the Oder and Neman in art and literature, in everyday life both now and in the past.

The project partners took part in meetings with Mr. Witold Bokiej and Mr. Marian Kołaczyk, who talked about their lives connected with the Oder and the Vilnius region.

Project participants took part in trips to the Valley of Love in Zatoń Dolna on the Oder River and to the Lower Oder Valley in Gryfino, which, together with the German national park Nationalpark Unteres Odertal, forms the Lower Oder Valley International Park.

The project partners also visited Chojna and the surrounding area, including the war cemetery in Siekierki, Czcibora Mountain and Pszczelnik, the place where the plane carrying Lithuanian national heroes, pilots, crashed. Steponasem Dariusem i Stasysem Girenasem.

The main goal of the project was to get to know both cultures, to gain knowledge about the role played by the titular rivers in the lives of the inhabitants, and to establish cooperation between the twin towns of Douzelage.

The project was initiated by the President of the Management Board of the Douzelage Association in Chojna, Mr. Janusz Salamończyk, and coordinated by Ms. Anna Dłużak.
