Foreign professional internships for students of the Secondary School Complex in Chojna, Malta
From April 24 to May 22, 2026, eight students from the Secondary School Complex in Chojna, studying hotel management technicians and food and catering technicians, completed a four-week internship in Marsaskala, Malta. The trip was part of the "International Educational Mobility of Students, Graduates, and Vocational Education Staff" project.
The "Internships abroad" project of the FERS program was implemented by the Douzelage Association in Chojna, and its main goal was for young people to gain practical professional experience in an international environment and to develop linguistic and intercultural competences.
Students studying to become hospitality technicians completed internships at the Sensi Hotel. Their duties primarily involved providing professional guest service. They worked at the front desk, taking reservations and checking guests in. They also assisted with room preparation and learned the principles of hotel operation. They also ensured high standards of service consistent with international standards. Daily contact with tourists from various countries allowed them to hone their English skills in practical professional situations.
Students majoring in Nutrition and Catering Services completed an internship at the Sensi Hotel restaurant. Their responsibilities included preparing dishes according to Mediterranean recipes, supporting the kitchen and catering staff, serving restaurant guests, and ensuring the aesthetics and high quality of the dishes served. During the internship, the students developed their culinary skills, gained professional experience, and learned effective teamwork and professional customer service in an international work environment.
Throughout their stay, the participants received substantive support from internship supervisors from their host institutions, who ensured the smooth running of the internship, provided valuable advice, and assisted with daily duties. Mr. Krzysztof Janik, a teacher from the Chojna Primary School Complex, also supervised the students, supporting them with both organizational and educational matters.
An important element of their stay in Malta was learning about local culture, history, and traditions. The students took a cruise to the capital, Valletta. Strolling through the streets of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, they admired sights such as the Upper Barrakka Gardens, the Grand Master's Palace, and the historic architecture dating back to the era of the Order of Malta. They were also left with an unforgettable impression by the views of the Grand Harbour and the unique atmosphere of the city's historic center.
We also visited Marsaxlokk, a picturesque fishing town famous for its distinctive, colorful boats and traditional fish market. It was an excellent opportunity to learn about the daily lives of the island's inhabitants and the region's culture.
In Marsaskala, the youth also took part in walks along the surrounding cliffs, which offered picturesque views of the Mediterranean Sea. These moments spent in nature allowed for relaxation after the internships, group bonding, and admiring Malta's extraordinary landscapes.
For all participants, it was a unique time full of challenges, new experiences, and personal growth. The opportunity to work in a real-world professional environment abroad allowed the students to put into practice the knowledge they acquired during their studies and develop skills essential in the modern job market, such as independence, responsibility, communication skills, and teamwork. Daily experience in an English-speaking environment also significantly improved their language skills and self-confidence in international interactions.
Employers highly appreciated the attitude and commitment of the internship participants, highlighting their diligence, punctuality, personal culture, and willingness to learn and take on new challenges. Such positive feedback is the best confirmation that the students coped well in their new professional environment and proudly represented the Secondary School Complex in Chojna and Poland abroad.
Participating in the "International Educational Mobility of Students, Graduates, and Vocational Education Staff" project, the FERS program's "Internships Abroad" initiative, provided students not only with an opportunity to gain valuable professional experience, but also to learn about new cultures, develop independence, and build openness to collaboration in an international environment. The skills and experiences they gain will undoubtedly be a significant asset in their further education and future careers. The project once again confirmed that international internships are an effective form of vocational training, allowing young people to better prepare for the demands of the modern labor market.
